It contains a wonderful forest, which is teeming not only with wildlife (dears, wild boars, ibex and more), but also with ancient heritage that marks an era of wonders. The more you cycle into this environment, the more you might have the pleasure to encounter all of the above.[/fusion_text][separator style_type=”none” top_margin=”20″ bottom_margin=”20″ sep_color=”” border_size=”” icon=”” icon_circle=”” icon_circle_color=”” width=”” alignment=”” class=”” id=””][title size=”2″ content_align=”left” style_type=”single” sep_color=”#c6d224″ class=”” id=””]Details[/title][fusion_text]We are starting the tour from “Krioneri”, leading by a guide-archeologist, and cycle for 4,5 kilometers, until we reach “Paleokastro” hill, where we can see the remains of the ancient walls that surrounded ancient Dekelia. This position was taken over by the Spartans during the Peloponnesian War, so that the Athenians couldn’t access the nearby areas of “Evvia”, “Oropos”, “Viotia” and also denying them access to fresh water coming from Mount Parnitha. Someone could say that this sight was where the fall of the Athenian Hegemony started, the “superpower” that ruled Greece at around 500 B.C. We go on with our ride inside this magical forest, towards spring “Kithara”, where the remains of ancient waterworks are visible. These waterworks supplied Athens of the Classic Era with fresh water from Mount Parnitha.
If we are fans of the uphill, then we can head towards “Katsimidi”, a viewpoint to see the ruins of an ancient beacon, a tower that served communication purposes by sending signals using fire. We are also able to see a lot of architectural remains of a newer era, which belong to the ex-royal family of Greece, the Glücksburg family.
If we are lucky enough, we might also encounter some or even all of the aforementioned local fauna.
The tour ends at “Krioneri” where we can enjoy a delightful light meal.
